This was tower number 3 on our list for the road trip. After visiting the site of the Foleyet Tower, flying the drone, and confirming that the tower is no longer standing, we continued driving through to Matheson. I think we arrived to the trail around 3pm. The road in was snow covered, but we were able to make it most of the way along to where the last house property is. After that, a 4×4 truck, or ATV was needed. A lot of deep, icy flooded sections where we had to walk along the frozen edge of the road. The hike in was pretty easy, and took about half hour. We had heard there was an old original lookout’s cabin along the way, and I think that cabin was an absolute highlight. Please, anyone who visits, take care of this gem. It is in incredible shape and was just so cool to come across and see and think about the living there season after season. The sign on the cabin read “Built May 1, 1928”. The tower itself was in relatively good shape. Felt solid. Bottom section of ladder was gone. A wall panel was gone, and the floor looked rotten. I would have loved to get a view of the snowy landscape from the top, but light was fading and we had to get back on the road to North Cobalt for the night. This is a really cool, and accessible site, and I’ll definitely visit it again.
